Is a response a review of reviews? This, then, is paratextual, an hors d'oeuvre. Overwhelmingly present by his absence here is Jorge Luis Borges - would you (see Notes from the Editor) like a review of this book by 'him'? You're welcome to vet. My 'books about books' credentials are on my website.

Upon review of the items posted on this website, I noticed that a number of writers mention Douglas Hofstadter. I have read most of Hofstadter's books and remember reading in METAMAGICAL THEMAS that he "would love to see a book consisting of nothing but a collection of reviews of it that appeared (after its publication, of course) in major newspapers and magazines." How shall we consider Douglas Hofstadter in relation to the book REVIEWS OF THIS BOOK that writers on this website are allegedly reviewing? What authority belongs to Hofstadter?

This insane book shows exactly how it feels to be mentally insane. Whoever reads it will know. That is why I recommend its reading but also that is why I recommend not to read it. Human minds must never get into the kind of thinking that this book takes them into. If you ever expeirence any similar experience in your life means that you are getting insane and that you must look for a way to get out of that mantal state as soon as possible. So, once you have felt the insanity of the book you should better stop reading and do something else.

So has anyone started a book called something like "Reviews of 'Reviews of This Book'" or maybe, "Meta-Reviews of This Book"? :-)

I'm thinking of something completely independent of _this_ book, that is, "Reviews of This Book."

What I imagine is a book consisting only of _reviews_ of the reviews of the book. Where you'd be commenting on the yet-to-be-written reviews of a book which did not yet exist.

To how many levels can this be carried? :-)

The advent of Google Docs provides an interesting platform from which to execute this project. Each author's review could be a doc embedded in a page, such that visiting the "Reviews Of This Book" would present the most up-to-date version possible of every review.

Authors could then be invited to re-read the page periodically and edit their reviews dynamically as time passes.

I congratulate you on pulling off this project. Now if only everything else Dr. Hofstadter has wished for in his writings would come about. Like in GEB where he saw no answer to one doubting one's own sanity. In any case, Douglas and I do communicate occasionally, mostly when I get something wrong writing to him and he can set me straight. Congrats again.
